The National Gallery with ABBA cover band, and pickpocket mingled…

Brief

To create and provide a top professional dinner event, during the EuroFinance Congress, for up to 200 guests, to include astonishing entertainment with wow-factor, excellent food and in a venue with trendy, modern design influence that clearly reflects Danish-Scandinavian inspiration.

Logistic Requirements

The client must have exclusive access to the chosen venue throughout the congress to preclude competitor events with similar status. The services must include sourcing and coordination of all catering, decoration, A/V and entertainment and the provision of transportation by deluxe vehicles.

Programme

“Statens Museum for Kunst” (The National Gallery) was the venue. The guests’ early evening arrivals were staggered and a one hour reception opened the evening, during which there was entertainment by a Danish singer – and a hired pickpocket mingled with the guests! Before dinner, the guests also had the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of the gallery. The singer was the evening’s compère and her dinner announcement was the cue for the host’s welcome speech. During the main course, entertainment was provided by “subversive” waiters (mingled with genuine waiters!!). After the dessert, guests were invited to the museum amphitheatre where the world famous ABBA cover band, “Arrival” wowed the guests, bringing the evening to a close in resounding style, before all guests were taken to their hotels.

In practice

Planning and preparations started a year before implementation with the presentation of various venues and programme ideas that could meet the client’s criteria. Regular teleconferences with the agency and the client widened the brief, raised the level of expectation and finally defined the programme. The theme for decor and entertainment was to be predominantly 1970s and ABBA was chosen as the embodiment of the ’70s. The challenges of combining a top level dinner in a cultural institution environment with 1970’s pop, requiring a specially built stage with full theatre lighting and sound effects, and packaging the product in authenticity in terms of colours, furniture and decoration were just one of the challenges of creating a successful event
